Choosing the right food for your pet can feel overwhelming, with so many options and conflicting opinions online. Pet food comparison websites can make the decision easier, but knowing which sources to trust is just as important.

Understanding how different review websites assess pet food can help you make a more informed choice for your pet.

* Pet Food Expert is a Pets Corner Service, and scores Pets Corners own brands alongside all other popular dog and cat foods. Each food is scored in the same way, and every listing has a link back to that brands website.

Established in 2017 by our Academy Training Team who were frustrated at the review websites at the time that appeared to be opinion based rather than factual. Pet Food Expert was an evolution of the material and training we use in our Academy to train on how to understand what makes a good pet food.

Our website scores purely on ingredient quality and quantity. We don’t believe cooking method makes much difference to a pet’s health - what style of food you feed depends on your pet and your lifestyle – so we don’t score on this.

Pros

Clear scoring system

Scoring is clear and understandable. Each score is built on assessing ingredients from each food group. The purpose of Pet Food Expert is to help owners understand the principles of what make a great pet food and use this knowledge to confidently choose the right diet for their furry friend.

Doesn’t make or generate money

There are no advertisements or sponsorships.

Doesn’t favour food processes

Scores are all ingredient led. Foods being ‘gently’ cooked doesn’t automatically make them better for an animal, the ingredients are what counts.

Assesses dog and cat foods

Pet Food Expert is currently the only UK food comparison website for cat owners.

More Company Information

Pet Food Expert lists information about company ethics (including brands eco credentials) as pet owners deserve to know as much as possible about their chosen brand.

Cons

Owned by Pets Corner

Pet Food Expert is a Pets Corner service and we do score our four own brands alongside others. However, each food is scored in the same way and every listing has a link to the brand website if customers wish to purchase. We simply lay out the facts.

A very long-established pet food review site, that boasts a large social media following and operates as a business. The website has claimed to be impartial but in 2026 after Years Dog Food recalled some of its foods over health concerns (read investigation here) it was discovered that Years and AADF had mutual owners. Users of AADF and Years Dog Food were rightly concerned at that time about how impartial AADF was. AADF gave a statement here.

Commercial relationship to brands

An owner of Years Dog Food had shares in AADF, we don’t know if this occurs with other Brands and AADF.

Makes and generates money

Ultimately AADF is a business that derives its income from selling advertising space to dog food companies.

Only assesses dog foods

Currently no scoring for cat foods.

Favours certain food processes

Certain processing methods are favoured and lead to higher scores. We suspect this might be because AADF shared ownership with Years Dog Food. Ultimately foods should be scored on their ingredients and nutritional value first and foremost.

Allows public comments

Whilst some users might find this helpful the comments will be anecdotal.

Unclear Scoring

Scoring is hard to read and understand.

This is a relatively new dog food comparison website, having only been established for a few years.

Website allows users to customise their search results by a wide range of specific ingredients.

Technically this website doesn’t directly own or have any involvement in any of the brands listed.

Information Blogs

Information blogs are available on the site to help users understand pet food better and answer their queries.

Uses Affiliate Links

Whilst Furra has no commercial relationship to food, they do earn commission through affiliate links and are part of the Amazon Associate Programme. They do also have a shop attached where users can purchase dog accessories.

Favours certain processes

They are open about this and say different processes will score more favourably.

Scores are Relative

Foods are ranked against other foods in the database, so as new better foods are added scores can shift. Foods should be ranked by their own merit. They don’t explain fully how they score.

Only scores dog foods

Only dog foods are scored.

Score not just nutritional

Part of the Furra scoring system includes ‘value for money’ and assesses the price per 100g of a product. While this can be relevant to customers it shouldn’t form part of the overall score, this should be strictly based on the ingredients and nutritional value of the food.

Pricing Isn’t Maintained

At time of press many of the prices they stated were incorrect.
